What this is
MaisonMate Plumbing Notes is a small editorial site about the plumbing and heating in London homes. I write it for people who want to understand their own house a bit better — what the pipes do, where things tend to go wrong, and what the choices are when something needs sorting.
What we cover
The articles fall into two rough groups. Some are about particular parts of London and the homes there:
- what plumbers across Croydon are usually called out for
- heating and pipework in Ealing's period properties
- drains, boilers and outdoor water supply in Bromley homes
Others are about the systems themselves — how central heating moves warmth around, choosing between combi, system and heat-only boilers, clearing and preventing blocked drains, finding hidden leaks early, and planning a bathroom that lasts.
How it's written
I try to answer the question first and explain the detail after. No jargon for its own sake. Where there's a real trade-off — cost against hassle, a quick fix against a proper one — I'll say so rather than pretend there's one right answer.
